Our Story

Our Story

In 2003, BDCC (Behta Darya Community Church) began as a small weekly gathering, taking place in the homes of group members.

We began this journey together because we all shared a common desire to grow in our faith. Most of us had come from either India or Pakistan, seeking a better life for our families and coming generations and decided to make the sacrifice of leaving our homelands and migrating to Canada.

Each family had their own faith journey, and yet shared similar cultural and ethnic backgrounds, which made this chemistry even more special. We all have at one point or another experienced a renewal and began to see life through a new lens since we heard about the story of Jesus Christ.

Some had been suffering from sickness, from depression, financial troubles, difficult family issues, and many other challenges. Miraculously they had been freed from each of these struggles just by believing that Jesus could indeed free them.

The numbers grew and a bigger space was needed to accommodate everyone. This is when the group became a church family and for the next 15 years, our gatherings took place at a church building which we rented, located in Etobicoke, Ontario.

Since the initial days of our gathering, we had come up with the idea of putting money aside for the dream of owning our own church building. As mentioned before, we had all come from different faith backgrounds, having followed different eastern religious practices. Having seen many temples and mosques here in the Greater Toronto Area, we thought it would be a great blessing to have a church building, which would also cater to the communities in which we serve.

Behta Darya is in Hindi, which means “Flowing River” and is based on an Old Testament Biblical reference in Ezekiel 47. It represents and describes the foretelling of Jesus Christ being “The River” and source of renewal, blessing, life and hope.

Our dream of owning our own place of worship came into realty in February 2016. (Please visit our Building page to view more details…)

What We Believe

We believe that God is one. He is the Creator of all things. He became flesh and came into the world – as Jesus Christ, in order to have a relationship with the masterpiece of his creation – human beings.

Jesus came to reveal the glory of God the Father. Through his example, we learn to love unconditionally, to forgive, to seek justice and mercy, to exemplify a compassionate heart full of humility and sacrifice, and to be His disciples and carry out the mission of letting others know how much they are loved by their Creator.

We do this because He first taught us to do so, and we use the Bible as our sole guide. It is His written word that guides us and helps us care for our communities and develop such a great burden to bring peace and restoration to a broken world.
